Some animals have thousands of Instagram followers. Sir Nils Olav the king penguin has thousands of loyal subjects and a title.
According to The Telegraph, the Edinburgh Zoo bird is a knighted honorary member of the King of Norway’s Guard. This position comes with perks, like the chance to inspect the soldiers of the guard whenever they visit the Scottish capital.
One of these meetings occurred on Monday, when 50 soldiers marched into the zoo to bestow the penguin with a promotion to Brigadier Sir Nils Olav.
The title change was accompanied with a ceremony, where newly-named Brigadier Nils waddled down the zoo’s penguin walk flanked by stoic soldiers.
“We are honored to host His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard as they bestow a prestigious new title upon our king penguin, Sir Nils Olav,” Barbara Smith, acting chief executive for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said. “It is a very proud moment and represents the close collaboration between our two countries, Scotland and Norway.”
The King of Norway’s Guard is in Scotland to participate in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an annual display of performances by military bands from around the world.
