She’s already got six dogs of her own, but Katherine Heigl was tempted to add to her brood on Monday when she teamed up with Best Friends Animal Society to help pooches at the Los Angeles Department of Animal Care & Control. She walked away empty handed, but she helped plenty of homeless dogs get ready for the 12-hour drive to the Best Friends sanctuary in Utah.

Animal rescue has always been important to the Grey’s Anatomy star. She told Access Hollywood how she and her husband rescued their most recent doggie addition from a trashcan in Mexico. “Someone had literally thrown him out, and he was probably, at the time, three or four weeks old … [my husband] Josh said I think we should take this one home,” she said.
