Jon Hamm, the star of the cult series Mad Men, may play stoic, but in real life the tears pour as easily as Don Draper’s Scotch.

“A movie that made me cry recently was Marley & Me,” Hamm tells PEOPLE. “Holy cow. If you have a dog, forget about it. It will crush you.”

As it turns out, Hamm does have a dog, a shepherd mix named Cora, and he’s often spotted walking with his pooch through his L.A. neighborhood. Cora, in her own way, resembles troublemaking Marley. She woke up the actor on the morning of his latest Emmy nomination announcement and “farted in my face,” he told And, she likes to spend time on the couch, where she isn’t technically allowed to sit.

Hamm may be an alpha male, but he isn’t afraid to show his soft side, to Cora or anyone else. The other movie that makes him cry? Terms of Endearment. The line to meet the man of your dreams forms to the left.
