The country singer’s pal is a distant relative of the University of Georgia’s furry team mascot
The instant Jason Aldean brought his new puppy, Athens, home two years ago, he knew the dog would be a die-hard Georgia football fan – just like the singer.
“I had a Georgia helmet on the floor and she went right up to it,” Aldean says in the new issue of PEOPLE Country. “She’s a natural born fan. She has the jersey she has on now, it’s a new one because she wore the other one out.”
Sports runs through the dog’s veins – literally. The female bulldog is a distant relative of Uga, Georgia’s furry team mascot and is even named for the town where the university is located.
“I wanted the same bloodline as the actual mascot,” Aldean says. “So I went on an extensive search on Google and happened to find a breeder who had one of the sons of Uga V.”
When the breeder said he had a white female available, the singer drove to see her with his two daughters (Keeley, 8, and Kendyl, 4) “just to be sure I could convince my wife,” he says.
“As soon as they saw the puppy, it was a done deal,” Aldean says. “I got her when she was 8 weeks old, she could fit in your hand.”
