A Labrador’s brief jaunt off the ranch accidentally turned into a multi-year trip.

Three years ago, Ricardo Dominguez’s dog Brownie wandered off her owner’s horse ranch in New Mexico, even though she had someone watching her, reports NBC San Diego. And Dominguez has been searching for Brownie ever since, until Friday, when he got a call from an animal shelter 720 miles from home.

A animal care facility in Bonita, California, ended up with the Labrador retriever after she was spotted wandering the streets of San Diego County. Vets at the shelter found a microchip on Brownie and traced it back to Dominguez. When they called his home, they reached his girlfriend, who was happy to pass on the good news.

“She said, ‘They found Brownie.’ I say, ‘What? Where is he? San Diego? Do I want to keep him? Hell, yeah,’ ” said the loyal owner.

After getting the call, Dominguez made the 720-mile trip, driving through the night, to reunite with his furry best friend. The 7-year-old Lab remembered Dominguez instantly and the two shared a long, slobbery embrace.

While it is unclear how Brownie got to San Diego, she is now back home, a little more wary than before, but still the same dog that Dominguez adores.
