Now, sinkholes are coming for our dogs. It’s official: I’m declaring a War on Sinkholes.

Liberty, Missouri, resident Lisa Van Valkenburgh let her 12-year-old German shepherd Maverick out Thursday evening. The dog apparently wandered off, and the Valkenburghs mounted a search effort, eventually finding him Saturday afternoon — literally underground.

“I walked this road. I walked down and back and walked on this side and came right here and heard a moan, like a bark,” Van Valkenburgh told Fox4. The family excavated the 5-foot-deep sinkhole and discovered Maverick, a little worse for wear but relatively okay.

Greg Sager, the Platte County Director of Public Works, told Fox4 that water caused a water pipe to rust, and water pouring out of the hole that developed washed away the soil and created the sinkhole. A new pipe is apparently forthcoming, but how many more innocent victims will the Earth claim before we address this threat once and for all?

Make America great again. Get rid of sinkholes. For our children, and our dogs, and our IHOPs.
