Cat Guides Injured Hiker to Safety in Swiss Alps

A cat apparently guided an injured hiker to safety in the Swiss Alps, and other hikers have confirmed the cat's presence in the area since 2013

“So rightly I am watching these mountains that I know, the storm getting colder in the place of the frozen sun.”

Those are lyrics from pioneering black metal band Immortal’s “Mountains of Might,” but they may also serve as a manifesto for the cat that’s apparently been shepherding injured hikers to safety in the Swiss Alps for years now.

The hiker, a Hungarian man, said he sprained his ankle while walking in the mountains near Gimmelwald, Switzerland. The route he’d intended to take back was blocked, but a black and white cat showed up while he was resting and pondering his situation and guided him back to safety.

He explained in detail in a Reddit post:

“[The cat] was just wandering around, [then] found me while I was resting from a hike,” he said. “Then she was walking and kept looking at me to follow [and] led me straight to the path that would take me back down to the valley.”

Another hiker posted a video from 2013 that showed the same black and white cat, while several other hikers chimed in and added that they’d seen the mysterious cat in the area.

Eventually, it was revealed that the feline guide belongs to a couple who own a nearby hostel. However, we would prefer to be left alone in our delusion that the cat’s actually an avenging spirit of the mountains who must guide lost hikers back to safety to atone for misdeeds in a past life.
