Gone are the days of Fido and Fluffy – this year, it was Buddy and Lucy who reigned. At least according to adoptable pet database, who last week released their annual ranking of the top 10 most popular names for adoptable pets.

For the third year in a row, Buddy and Max held the top two spots for dogs, while Lucy and Smokey were the No. 1 and No. 2 cat names. Though many have stayed consistent from year to year, some new cat names like Midnight, Daisy and Missy climbed the charts. And for the first time in recent history, Bella made the list for both cats and dogs.

The top 10 names for adoptable dogs were: Buddy, Max, Daisy, Lucy, Charlie, Bella, Molly, Jack, Sadie and Lady; and the top 10 for adoptable cats were: Lucy, Smokey, Midnight, Bella, Molly, Daisy, Oreo, Shadow, Charlie and Angel.

Additionally, the site shared some of the year’s most bizarre names – monikers like Mr. Tomfoolery Scardeycat Eliot and Price Xavier Binxley (try saying that three times fast!). “While funny names are always a big hit, we are also seeing a trend of pet parents giving their furry friends middle names,” Betsy Saul, the co-founder of, tells “We’ve heard names such as ‘Sunshine Ray,’ ‘Roxanna Bobanna Little’ and ‘Madison Wisconsin,’ suggesting that these animals are more like family members than family pets.”
