So what if it’s San Diego? Let it snow!

Yun Zi, the San Diego Zoo’s 2-year-old giant panda, got to experience his first taste of snow on Thursday. The sleepy youngster emerged from a slumber to check out the fresh powder, and decided he liked it enough to walk all the way from one end of his exhibit to the other. (His mother, Bai Yun, had no interest in the snow.)

But this holiday season had more than one surprise in store for Yun Zi. Not only did he get to feel snow, he also got his first Christmas tree – made from bamboo! The zoo’s horticulture staff constructed the 5-ft. tree using two different kinds of bamboo.

Yun Zi proved to be stronger than the faux pine – he knocked it over and ate the ornamental fruits and veggies that had once hung from the bamboo branches. And then he went and took a nap.
