Birth of April the Giraffe's Second Calf 'Imminent,' Zoo Says: How You Can Watch
The world's most famous giraffe is expecting her fifth calf
The world’s most famous giraffe mom is about to cause a frenzy all over again.
On Wednesday, keepers at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, gave an update on pregnant April the Giraffe, calling the birth of her second calf “imminent.”
Around 7 a.m. ET, a Facebook post noted that April’s udders have filled and she’s producing a “yellow/cloudy” discharge — signs that she is almost “there.” “Now of course ‘there’ could be hours, a day or so, perhaps,” the post read. “What I will promise, it won’t be two months of waiting!”
Fans are watching a livestream on the Animal Adventure Park’s YouTube channel now; those who really want to know when April is giving birth can also sign up for text message alerts at aprilthegiraffealert.com.
In 2017, pregnant April famously lingered on a livestream for the final two months of her 16-month pregnancy as fans anxiously awaited the birth of her fourth calf, Tajiri. According to Google, April’s stream received more than 232 million live views, which added up to 7.6 billion minutes of live watch-time. On the day April welcomed her baby boy to the world, more than 14 million people tuned in, with 1.2 million from around the world watching the actual birth as it happened. At the time, these numbers made the arrival one of the top five most-watched moments for a live event ever on YouTube.
As of 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, 28,000 viewers were watching April on YouTube, with many in the comments noting every movement of the mama-to-be.
April is already mom to four other calves, including Tajiri. Oliver the giraffe, Tajiri’s 6-year-old father, is once again April’s baby daddy.
