Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Today, meet Bear, a wire-haired German shepherd whose life was turned upside down when his elderly owner passed away last year.

When the 8-year-old pooch first arrived at Oreo’s Animal Rescue in Dickinson, N.D., seven months ago, he was frightened. The quiet life he once knew was suddenly gone, replaced by the noisy interruptions of other dogs and cats.

“He was a little depressed at first,” says office manager Jayme Calhoun. “But he’s now used to the routine.”

Since Bear is a senior, he’s pretty set in his ways. He can show a little aggression when other animals try to eat his food. But when it comes to people, Bear can be tremendously loyal given a chance to build up trust.

“He’s a sweetheart. Once he knows you, he is yours,” says Calhoun.

An owner who can provide Bear with a low-key lifestyle for the remainder of his golden years would be ideal. “He likes to relax, he likes little short walks,” says Calhoun. “He mostly likes to lay around and be an old guy.”
