Adopt Me! Senior Cat Dorito Has Happy Years Ahead of Him

The FIV-positive feline was saved from a life of neglect at Florida's Caboodle Ranch in February

Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Meet Dorito, a long-haired feline who was one of more than 600 neglected cats rescued from the Caboodle Ranch in Lee, Fla., in February.

It was the largest number of cats the ASPCA has ever seized in an animal cruelty investigation. Hundreds of animals living at the now-closed Caboodle Ranch animal sanctuary were suffering from upper respiratory infections, ringworm and eye infections – and FIV-positive Dorito, 8, was one of the lucky ones saved. Sadly, the ASPCA found numerous cats dead on the property.

Several months later, this senior cat has recovered well from his ordeal and is ready to find a place to comfortably live out his golden years.

“He’s an all-around great cat,” says Sarah Brown, executive director of the Humane Society of Pinellas, where Dorito is currently up for adoption along with more than 70 other Caboodle cats. “He gets along with other cats, and is friendly to everyone.”

This “amazingly beautiful” cat, is always looking for affection or something fun to play with. “He’s extremely playful for a senior,” says Brown. “He also likes to be held and cuddled.”

Even though he has FIV, the feline form of HIV, he acts perfectly healthy and doesn’t require any medication – he just lives with a compromised immune system. “People are fearful and believe it is a fatal sentence,” says Brown. “But many FIV-positive cats live full, healthy happy lives.”
