It’s Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month and in honor of the wonderful rescue dogs out there, we’re introducing you to pets-in-waiting all throughout October. Today, we’d like you to meet Moose, a 1-year-old Chihuahua mix whose best match would be an active owner who can keep up with him.

Outgoing, fun-loving Moose has clocked a lot of miles in his short life. The sweet pup came to the Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue in Ellicott City, Md., from southern California where, says the rescue, Chihuahuas fill up shelters in alarming numbers due to their popularity in Hollywood.

“They are frequently euthanized as the shelters cannot keep up with their numbers,” says rescue spokeswoman Joan Burdette. “Thanks to a program called ‘Pup My Ride,’ Chihuahuas fly to other places in the country where there is a large demand for their adoptions. It has been enormously successful in Maryland and Moose is sure that sometime soon it will be his turn to be picked by his forever family.”

The adventurous pup is always ready to chase a ball or hang with another pooch. “He has a BFF at the shelter, another California Chihuahua, of course,” says Burdette, “and they love their time in the play yard chasing each other.”

Moose’s perfect owner is a single person, a couple or a family with older children who want a dog as their constant companion. They should love to take walks – or even short runs – because Moose loves to exercise his long legs!

If you think he’s the pup for you, fill out an application on the rescue’s website.

Adopting a pet is an amazing experience – and a big decision! Before bringing a pet into your home it’s important to consider your family circumstances and do your research on breeds.
