Home. Some cats and dogs never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary homeless pet every week. Today, we’d like you to meet Maxwell, a young-at-heart senior kitty who’s a rock star when it comes to dealing with his dust allergies.

It’s hard to believe that just two years ago, this handsome orange tabby was quite sickly. The Animal Lifeline of Iowa, which helps abused, neglected or abandoned animals in the Des Moines area, took him in after his owners couldn’t figure out what was plaguing him. After a battery of tests, specialists determined he was allergic to dust and dust mites.

Thanks to allergy shots and regular lotion baths, he’s much more comfortable now – but he needs an owner who will tend to his special needs, which include changing his bedding everyday and administering his medication.

Maxwell pays no mind to his allergies, and he’s “a laid back lover boy,” according to the rescue’s website. This 10-year-old could also be described as the feline Jon Bon Jovi. “You wouldn’t guess his age by looking at him,” says Hope Lynch, an adoption counselor there. “He loves looking at the birdfeeder out the window and he loves catnip.”

And, like a mature rock star, his meow “is really loud and raspy,” says Lynch. “He has a really great purr.” He would do great in a home with other dogs or cats, as he’s very social with the other felines at the rescue.
