The 9-year-old Maltese mix had hair so matted she couldn't see out of her eyes

Home. Some cats and dogs never have one to call their own. We want to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary homeless pet every week. Today, we’d like you to meet Lily Lu, a Maltese mix rescued from neglect in a Maryland home.

This 9-year-old pooch was brought into the SPCA of Anne Arundel County recently with hair so badly matted that she couldn’t even see.

“She was being kept by a grandmother who had dementia,” says Mindy Nelson, fundraising and event coordinator for the shelter. “The family was completely unaware of her existence, so we don’t know how long she was there, but it takes a long time to get that matted.”

A family member took frightened Lily Lu to the shelter, where staff there performed a transformation like something out of Extreme Makeover. They got rid of the matted hair, and spayed and micro-chipped her. She’s now being monitored to determine whether she has any existing health problems, but she can see perfectly now that the hair is gone.

Still timid and confused (“Poor thing was shaking like a leaf [after surgery]),” Nelson says), Lily Lu needs a patient owner who will help build her confidence and slowly introduce her to the world around her.

“She literally was sightless because of the matting in front of her face,” Nelson says. “She’s frightened. It’s just going to take time but I’m sure with all of the care she’ll get from our caretakers, she’ll come around.”

If you want to help sweet Lily Lu blossom into a loving dog, contact the SPCA of Anne Arundel County at (410) 268-4388.
