Home. Some cats and dogs never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to extraordinary homeless pets every week. Today, we’d like you to meet a handsome grey feline named Evander who we found via Adopt-a-Pet.com.

Named for a certain boxer who, like him, is missing part of his ear, Evander was rescued from a kill shelter by Austin Pets Alive of Austin, Tx., in October. He’s a big bear of a kitty, who loves to give hugs by putting his front paws up on your collarbone. You’d never know that this affectionate cat was in a lot of pain just a few months ago.

“He was found with severe infections to his paws, ear and nose. His skin was peeling off, presumably from some sort of acid burn,” vet technician Sarah Weinstein tells PEOPLEPets.com. “He remained a sweet and loving kitty all through his treatment and recovery.”

Evander’s wounds have healed, but you may need to hand him a tissue every once in a while – it’s believed that the acid he was in contact with damaged his nasal passages, so he sneezes quite often.

Evander is also FIV-positive, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying life to the fullest. “He loves being in people’s lap and getting chin and cheek rubs,” Weinstein adds. Because he carries the virus (which is passed through blood transfusions and deep bite wounds) he needs to be in a home with no other animals or with pets who also carry it. Evander’s best pal Nevada the cat, who he met at the shelter, would be the perfect companion for him because he is also a carrier. It would be great if these feline friends could find a forever home together.

For more information on both Evander and Nevada, visit their profiles on Adopt-a-Pet.com and Austin Pets Alive. Adopt-a-Pet.com is a non-profit that lets shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, pet rescue groups and pet adoption agencies advertise their homeless pets to adopters for free.
