Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Today, meet Carmelite, a 6-year-old long-haired Chihuahua mix rescued from the New York area.

Sadly, like so many pets these days, this sweet girl was given up after many years as a family pet because her owners could no longer care for her.

When she arrived at the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, New York, in July, she was morbidly obese from years of poor diet and exercise. She was a whopping 49 lbs and was suffering from other medical conditions related to the extra weight. Thanks to a calorie restricted diet and exercise (including multiple walks per day) Carmelite and has already lost 20 pounds! She is definitely on her way to a much healthier lifestyle.

“Carmelite is a lovable, adorable little lady,” says administrative coordinator Cassandra Formas-Espadas. “One look at her and you are guaranteed to fall in love.  She was quite shy and reserved at first but since she has been with Animal League America, her personality has blossomed.”

This cute pie needs an owner who is dedicated to helping her stay healthy, so she can lose even more weight. If you have other animals at home, Animal League America recommends bringing in your other pet for a meet and greet to make sure she will fit right in with your clan. If you are interested in her, contact Christina Travalja at with the animal number R152465.
