Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We’d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary adoptable pet every week. Meet Benny, a 9-year-old Lab mix who’s grateful for a second chance.

Rescuers from the HALO Animal Rescue saw something special in this elderly pup, and saved him from euthanasia at the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Benny is very friendly,” says Jonathan McDonell, director of operations for HALO. “He really enjoys getting out of this kennel and running around in the adoption center playroom.”

But while he’s good with children and other canines, Benny won’t cuddle up to just anybody.

“He is very affectionate if you give him a chance to warm up to you,” he says. “The transition to the shelter has been somewhat tough on him. He’s a bit apprehensive at first, but warms up quickly.”

And despite being older, he’s got a lot of good years in him. “He’s still quite playful. He enjoys exploring and going for walks,” says McDonell. “Benny loves water; we’re pretty sure he’d enjoy having a pool!”
