Over the last 100 years, dogs have helped shape the history of who we are. Like Buddy, the first guide dog to live in the United States in the 1920s. Trakr (right), the rescue dog that pulled the last survivor from the rubble at the World Trade Center in 2001. And the original Marley, the rambunctious Lab that inspired the best-selling book Marley & Me, whose story has touched so many people around the world.

So, as a celebration of these canines, we trolled the history books and pulled together a list of the most important dogs of the last 100 years. In our new photo gallery you’ll see dogs that made history and headlines, and dogs that became icons on TV and in movies.
