Inside Jenn Brown's Southern Baby Shower
The actress and her husband Wes Chatham are expecting a son, she announced at her baby shower on Saturday.
Jenn Brown had her bets on a baby boy — and it turns out the odds were in her favor.
The mom-to-be announced that she and her husband, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay star Wes Chatham, are expecting a son, while surrounded by friends and family at her Southern gentleman-themed baby shower on Saturday.
As they made their way into the baby bash, which was hosted by Good Carma Studio, guests were greeted by chalkboards adorned with fitting phrases like, “Welcome y’all,” and “Yes, Ma’am.”
Touches of blue, peach and sage green were used to decorate the party space, including several arrangements of moss elephants with roses and hydrangeas from The Bashful Rose, a Stride Rite shoe tower allowing the American Ninja Warrior host to browse her favorite boy styles and a colorful candy bar.
In between sipping Leaf & Love‘s sugar-free lemonade and noshing on an organic Southern spread made up of baked chicken fingers, sweet potato fries, peanut butter and jelly waffle sandwiches and caprese salads from Paleta, Brown’s gal pals indulged in massages from Manly Handz.
Before sending her guests home with goodie totes featuring gifts provided by Mabel’s Labels, Brown, 33, and her friends celebrated the sex of her upcoming arrival with a vanilla and red velvet bow-tie cupcake cake from Polkatots.
After the baby shower, Brown opened up to PEOPLE about everything from finding out the sex to her plans for baby boy’s nursery.
PEOPLE: It’s a boy — congratulations! Did you have any inkling that you were having a boy?
Jenn: Thank you! Yes, I did actually feel like it was going to be a boy. When my friends and family would ask, I would say, “I think it’s a boy,” although I really had nothing to base it on — just a gut feeling!
Wes and I just wanted the baby to be healthy, that was the main thing. But, I have to say, now that we know it’s a boy, I am relieved because I know what to do with boys. I was not a girly girl growing up so no painted nails, braids or dresses for me.
PEOPLE: Now that you know the sex, are you excited to go shopping? Have you already started buying for baby?
Jenn: Absolutely! Truthfully, I had already started looking at boys clothes. I saw the cutest little baby flannel onesie the other day that I cannot wait to go get. Baby Gap, here I come!
PEOPLE: Tell us about the nursery — did you have an idea in mind or were you waiting to find out the sex?
Jenn: Wes and I had already picked out a style that could work with either a boy or girl. We are working with Oilo Studio to design the nursery and we chose grey and white colors for the nursery furniture and bedding. This allowed us to accent with gender-specific colors once we confirmed the sex.
PEOPLE: How has the pregnancy been? Any morning sickness? Crazy cravings?
Jenn: I have been very blessed with this pregnancy, as I didn’t have any morning sickness. I’ve tried my best to stick to my pre-pregnancy daily routine as much as possible, but I definitely needed to take mid-afternoon naps early on.
I’ve been trying my best to cook meals at home and exercise regularly. I figured this would be the best plan for getting back into pre-baby shape after he’s born because I will only have a few months before we start taping American Ninja Warrior again.
I haven’t felt any crazy cravings, although I will say I am definitely swayed by TV commercials. I can see a commercial for macaroni and cheese and guess what I’m making for dinner that night?! Mac-n-Cheese!
PEOPLE: How has Wes been during the pregnancy? How do you think he’ll be as a father?
Jenn: We actually found out that I was pregnant right in the middle of Wes taping The Hunger Games: Mockingjay movies. He was home for three weeks while they moved production to Europe for the second movie and we got pregnant right when he got home. Right before he left, we found out the great news!
He recently just left to film a new TV series in Toronto for the next five months, so he missed the first few months and he’ll miss the end of the pregnancy as well. The good news is, he’ll get to be home for the birth.
When he has been home, he has been amazing! He is super helpful around the house and gives the BEST foot massages! I know he will be a wonderful father and I can’t wait to see him hold our little guy for the first time in his arms.
PEOPLE: Have you already decided on a name? Are you and Wes on the same page when it comes to names?
Jenn: We have decided on a name, although we are not sharing it at this time. We actually had both a boy and a girl name already agreed upon so that was good.
PEOPLE: What are you most looking forward to as a new mom?
Jenn: Caring for a child is such a special experience and I already feel an amazing connection to my son, so I really just can’t wait to meet him and hold him in my arms. I’ve heard there’s no moment quite like that in your life.
