“How many of us just love listening to our parents tell stories from when we were little?” asks author Cristina Carlino.
That idea is the driving concept behind Cristina’s new book, The Changing Room ($15.95, left), a beautiful fill-in-the-blanks journal illustrated by Kyle Hollingsworth and designed for a mother to someday give to her daughter.
“It’s a thank-you to her for what she’s given you,” Cristina explains. “It allows you to tell her your story.”
Cristina, the founder of Philosophy cosmetics and mom to daughter Grace, now 8, came up with the name of her book because she found motherhood to be life changing.
“As much as you think you’re teaching your children, they’re actually teaching you,” she says. “My daughter humbles me.”
The book takes readers through several “rooms” of the house, and asks prodding questions about their experiences as mothers, as well as their daughters’ milestones.
“I don’t know that I’ll always be around to tell Grace these stories,” Cristina says. “So at least the book will be here to tell her how things were.” There are spaces throughout the pages to add photos and keepsakes, too.
Cristina’s next step is to create a version for boys, but she’s passed the responsibility on to friend (and celeb mom) Mariska Hargitay. “She’s rewriting the questions,” Cristina explains. “I admire the way women respond to her, and I know she’ll do a wonderful job.”
Proceeds from The Changing Room actually benefit Mariska’s non-profit, The Joyful Heart Foundation, which fights sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.
“It makes the book even more of a giving project,” Cristina says. “You give it to your daughter, yourself and to an organization that’s working for a change. And that is an incredible gift.”
