Dad may play the Smurfs’ sworn enemy Gargamel in the new film, but Hank Azaria‘s son Hal has no such such qualms.

The 2-year-old cuddled up to a stuffed Smurf pal — as well as mom Katie Wright — at the movie’s New York City premiere on Sunday evening.

After an early start, Hal is now doing very well, Azaria, 47, tells PEOPLE.

“We were unaware of [prematurity] until it happened to us,” he said a few months after his son’s birth.

“He was born before he had a suck-swallow reflex.”
