Savannah Guthrie's Mother Is Hoping for a Granddaughter
"There's nothing better than a daughter," says Nancy Guthrie of her hopes for the Today show anchor
Savannah Guthrie’s mom has put in a special request with the stork.
During their interview for PEOPLE’s Mother’s Day special – featuring stars hanging out with their moms in this week’s issue – the expectant Today anchor and mom Nancy Guthrie hit the theater in New York City and discussed Savannah’s coming attraction.
“We don’t know what we’re having, we’re keeping it a surprise,” says Savannah, 42, who’s due with her first child in August. But that doesn’t stop Nancy from wishing.
“In my heart of hearts, I would hope for Savannah to have a girl,” says her mom, 72. “I probably shouldn’t say that because my son is just everything to me, but there’s nothing better than a daughter.” Adds Savannah, “My mom is my best friend.”
So how did she tell her BFF she was pregnant? “We decided, ‘Let’s FaceTime our parents,” Savannah says of how she shared her and husband Mike Feldman’s happy news last December. “I said, ‘Hi, Mom,’ and showed her the stick. She screamed, ‘What?’ and we all cried. The screen grab pictures are so cute.”
Savannah, who says she’s had an easy pregnancy so far – “knock on wood” – admits she’s not the least bit prepared for motherhood. “I don’t know anything about how to take care of a little baby. I don’t even know what I don’t know. And I was a terrible babysitter.”
Nancy can attest. “She came home one day after babysitting down the street and said, ‘I dropped the baby!’ ” Savannah counters, “Mom! I did not, the baby fell. I was really upset about it, but she’s fine now, a happy wonderful child I’d like to think I’ve matured since then.”
Savannah isn’t picking her mom’s brain just yet, but, “I will,” she says. “I’m thankful I have a great example in my mom.”
