Sam Claflin is a new dad — and with that role comes a whole new set of challenges.

“I’m filming so much at the moment, I don’t get the opportunity to spend as much time with him as I’d like to,” The Hunger Games: Mockingjay star, who welcomed his first child with wife Laura Haddock in December, told PEOPLE Now, confirming the couple are parents to a son.

“So I think after [promo for his newest film Me Before You] finishes — which is just before Father’s Day — I will have a bit of family time,” the British actor, 29, adds.

“Just with the little man,” Claflin adds simply of how he plans to spend his first Father’s Day. “I don’t know what to expect — I have no expectations. I’ve never had that to look forward to before.”

And as far as how becoming a dad has changed him, fatherhood is nothing like Claflin thought it would be — but of course, the challenges and life-altering aspects are all worth it.

“I always thought, naïvely, that I knew what it would be like. I always thought that I’d understand,” says Claflin, who married British actress Haddock, 30, in 2013. “[But when he was] born, it’s like another level of love that you’ve never experienced before — [that] you can’t describe to someone unless [they’re] in it.

“Of course it’s hard, [but] it’s all worth it,” Claflin continues. “The rewards are just endless. He’s literally the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Me Before You, which also stars Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, premieres in theaters June 3.
