During the difficult days since Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer, Ryan O’Neal tells PEOPLE he has found comfort in connecting with his and Fawcett’s only son, Redmond O’Neal.

“I’m so proud of Redmond and the strength and resolve he is showing since his mother’s death,” Ryan says.

Currently serving a jail sentence for violating his probation on drug charges, Redmond, 24, was allowed to attend Fawcett’s funeral in Los Angeles Tuesday, where he served as a pallbearer with his father.

Bedside Visit

Redmond was unable to be with his mother during her final days, but was granted permission to leave jail for a three-hour visit to her bedside in April, during which he wore shackles. In Farrah’s final days, she and Redmond spoke by phone.

Redmond and Ryan were joined by Tatum O’Neal at the Cathedral of Our Lady in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, where 200 invited guests, including Fawcett’s Charlie’s Angels costars bid farewell to Farrah in a traditional Catholic service. Fawcett’s longtime friend Alana Stewart delivered a eulogy, saying “Goodbye, sweet girl.”
