While some celebrity parents rely on a full staff of helpers to raise their kids, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes prefer a more hands on approach.

“They are not a typical Hollywood, celebrity family,” a source tells PEOPLE of the private couple. “First, they don’t have a nanny. Instead, Eva’s family, including her mom, help out.”

The source adds that Gosling and Mendes — who is pregnant with the couple’s second child — do not rely on assistants either, and that “Ryan often grocery shops and runs errands.”

When one parent is working, the other will stay home with their daughter. “They are very hands-on parents and seem to very much enjoy it.”

The couple also declined to use a decorator to design Esmeralda’s baby room. “Instead Eva and Ryan had help from their families to get things ready,” the source says.

Both the Gosling and Mendes family have been a big support system for the young parents. “Ryan’s mom came from Canada,” the source says, adding that, “Eva’s mom practically lived with them to help out with the baby.”

Another source points out that Gosling’s hands-on parenting style was evident from the very beginning. “When Eva was pregnant the first time, Ryan was very supportive too and often came for check-ups.”

Gosling never left Mendes’ side during her delivery and was “very hands-on from the beginning,” the second source says. “He changed diapers and assisted with the baby’s first bath.”
