How Kate & William Avoided Photographers En Route to the Hospital
For once, the much-photographed Kate and William managed to avoid the cameras, when the soon-to-be mother was driven to the hospital from Kensington Palace early Monday morning – though officials will not say if William was behind the wheel.
What they would say is that the royals arrived at St. Mary’s Hospital before 6 a.m., while photographers on the scene say that the convoy was spotted around 5:30 a.m.
William and Kate and their entourage drove in two vehicles – a sedan and a town car – on side roads behind the hospital’s private Lindo Wing before entering the building through the entrance to the Mary Stanford wing.
It’s only two or three steps across a small sidewalk from the car to the hospital door.
Kate is being attended to by the Queen’s former gynecologist, Marcus Setchell, 69, who heads the delivery team, which includes Alan Farthing, 50, a prominent surgeon.
Also, inside the hospital are two of the couple’s key staff –their private secretaries Miguel Head and Rebecca Deacon.
Uncle-to-be, William’s brother Prince Harry, is at his base at RAF Wattisham with his Apache Army Air Corps squadron.
The Queen was at Windsor Castle when the news broke. She is expected to return to Buckingham Palace Monday afternoon.
At Buckingham Palace a crowd of wellwishers was already gathering at the gates.
First-time grandfather-to-be Prince Charles is expected for some engagements in York, in northeast England. Asked if he had any news, Prince Charles told Sky News late Monday morning, “Absolutely nothing at the moment. We’re waiting.”
There are also reports that Kate’s mother and sister, Carole and Pippa Middleton, were en route to St. Mary’s.
And Prime Minister David Cameron released a statement: “Obviously, best wishes to them.”
