Royal Baby Announcement Plan Mixes Theatrical Tradition with Technology
Staffers will post a bulletin on an easel outside Buckingham Palace before sending a digital announcement
As the countdown intensifies since Kate went into labor early Monday morning, the world awaits the long-planned for announcement of the Prince or Princess of Cambridge’s arrival.
Staffers will post a bulletin signed by the medical team on a wooden easel on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, and at the same time an announcement will go out digitally.
The posting on the easel (the same one that was used to announce Prince William’s birth in 1982) will precede any social media announcement and underline the historic traditions of the occasion.
But the first hint that the public will get that there’s some exciting baby news will come when someone from Kensington Palace is spotted leaving the hospital in London with an envelope. They’ll hand it to a member of the royal household who will deliver it to the palace.
When it’s placed on the easel, the sex of the baby will be revealed for the first time.
A spokesman reiterated last month that the couple don’t know the sex of the baby, which is being born in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s hospital, west London, where William and his brother Prince Harry, 28, were both born.
Dutiful husband William, 31, is by Kate’s side for the birth, which is most likely to be a natural one.
Delivering the tot will be royal obstetrician Marcus Setchell, assisted by a team including Dr. Alan Farthing. Both doctors attended to Kate when she was was ill during the first weeks of her pregnancy in December.
The first time the baby will be seen publicly will be when the happy couple pose for pictures on the steps of the hospital in west London. It’s possible that they will also be able to say the name, but that could also follow in a few days. William’s name was released several days post-hospital and Harry’s was revealed as his family left St. Mary’s.
