Robin Roberts is using her voice — quite literally — to help spread the message of compassion in times of more serious illness.

The Good Morning America anchor and cancer survivor has recorded dialogue for a new character on the Disney Junior animated series Doc McStuffins. In the special episode, Roberts plays the mom of a 4-year-old chemotherapy patient named Audrey, whose doll Hannah sees the Doc for a health issue that also leads to losing her hair.

“As someone who’s gone through cancer a couple of times, I know firsthand what it’s like,” shares Roberts, 56, in a PEOPLE-exclusive clip from the episode, titled “Hannah the Brave” and slated to premiered on National Cancer Survivors Day.

“I can only imagine, as a child, how you must feel and how frightened you must be,” she continues. “I just think it’s a wonderful way to really help a young person not be so frightened.”

Shares the series’ creator Chris Nee, “Since Doc McStuffins premiered, we’ve been contacted by numerous families of children who have been dealing with very serious illnesses. With this episode, we set out to tell a story for those kids whose illnesses can’t be cured by just a kiss and a cuddle.”

“It was important to me to let them know that we see them and they matter,” Nee adds.

About Roberts’ involvement, Nee says, it’s “so special because she has experienced what many of these kids are going through and she’s exactly who you would want cheerleading them through the tough times in their lives.”

Roberts’ Doc McStuffins episode “Hannah the Brave” premieres on Disney Junior Sunday, June 4, airing at 8 a.m. EDT / 7 a.m. CDT.
