Princess Charlene of Monaco confirmed earlier this year that she’s pregnant, but left out one small detail. Or actually, two.

She’s having twins!

The babies, expected to arrive before the end of the year, will be the first children for the South African-born former Olympic swimmer, 36, who married Prince Albert, 56, in 2011. News of the twins was first reported by Hello magazine.

Albert, the son of Princess Grace, has two other children from previous relationships: daughter Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, 22, and son Alexandre Coste, 11.

In a statement back in May, the palace of Monaco said: “T.S.H. the Prince and the Princess of Monaco are delighted to announce the pregnancy of H.S.H. Princess Charlene. The birth is expected at the end of the year.”

Albert’s good friend, New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Turk, also offered congratulations to the couple.

“The news certainly came as a surprise, but a very joyous one,” he tells PEOPLE. “They could not be happier.”
