While accepting the Male Athlete of the Year honor at Sunday’s Golden Goggle Awards in Los Angeles, Michael Phelps acknowledged that the past year has been filled with highs and lows.

“The last year has been a very interesting year for me. There have been a lot of ups and a lot of downs,” Phelps, 30, told the crowd at the event hosted by USA Swimming.

But after two DUI arrests, a stint in treatment and a six-month suspension from competing, the Olympian says he is finally feeling like himself again.

“It feels good to be back in the pool again and to be happy in the pool again, actually wanting to do it again,” he told a crowd that consisted of fellow Olympians such as Ryan Lochte, Katie Ledecky and Gary Hall Jr. “I think for a couple of years I was checked out.”

He also has much to celebrate in his personal life as he and his fianceé Nicole Johnson are planning a wedding and will be welcoming a baby boy this summer, and says he is grateful for everyone’s support.

“I would just like to really thank the people who stood by me through everything, the ups and the downs,” said Phelps. “Without you, I don’t know if I would be alive today.”
