Mark-Paul Gosselaar's Daughter Pitches Better Than His Son: I Want My Girls to 'Attain Their Dreams'

Mark-Paul Gosselaar‘s kids may not be into the beard their dad’s been sporting for his new role on Fox’s Pitch, but he’s hoping they gain a positive outlook from the show.

“I think it’s an important message for my daughters and for my sons as well,” Gosselaar, 42, told PEOPLE at the Paley Center for Media preview of Pitch in Beverly Hills, California, on Thursday night.

“I have two sons, and I don’t want them to grow up in a world where they tell their sisters that they can’t play baseball because of their gender,” he adds.

In reality, the gals in the Gosselaar family are highly talented on the field — just like Ginny Baker, Dad’s costar Kylie Bunbury‘s character.

“I could probably tell you that one of my daughters is probably better than one of my sons at throwing,” he says. “Baseball has been dominated by men for years, and it’s a male sport.

“I don’t think we live in that world anymore. I think we’ve evolved a little bit more. It’s important for my daughters to be able to dream and attain their dreams.”

As a father of four — Lachlyn Hope, 18 months, Dekker Edward, 2½, Ava Lorenn, 10, and Michael Charles, 12 — Gosselaar teaches his children that dreaming alone is not enough. Success takes hard work, discipline and talent.

“They have to have talent and ability,” he says. “I don’t think that just because you say you can, you do it. The character, when you watch the show, [is] still struggling. And no, she can’t pitch with the velocity of a man, but she pitches with something else. And that works.”

Shooting Pitch has definitely taken up the better part of Gosselaar’s calendar, but the Saved By the Bell alum always makes family his priority.

About date nights with his wife Catriona, he stresses, “It’s pretty important. We try to do it at least once a week, where we just go for dinner. Something that we do that’s very simple is we watch TV together at the end of the night.

“We binge-watch something — when I say binge-watch, binge-watching for us takes about a month,” he continues. “Right now, we’re watching Narcos. House of Cards, when that comes back. Mr. Robot, things like that … we don’t get three shows in a night. We get one show.”
