Marisa Ramirez is going to be a mom!

The Blue Bloods star is pregnant and expecting her first child in May, her rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

“This was a complete surprise,” Ramirez, 38, tells PEOPLE. “Some mornings I wake up and forget I’m pregnant! It just seems like it was meant to be — a happy surprise.”

Another surprise is the baby’s sex: The mom-to-be is holding off on finding out — at least for now.

“I’m sure it won’t be much longer until we can’t take the suspense anymore,” she admits.

And while she has yet to tackle a pile of parenting books — “Some of the books have totally freaked me out and they have been thrown across the room,” she jokes — she’s getting plenty of support and advice from the cast.

Donnie [Wahlberg] has known for awhile. He did a little happy dance when I told him and he’s been extremely supportive and sweet,” Ramirez says.

“It gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that my Blue Bloods family is there to help me transition into this new chapter of my life.”

But while her career has provided her with a constant support system, it’s also made indulging in her cravings a bit of a challenge.

“Because I’m an actress, I’m really hard on myself. It has been hard for me to give myself time to rest and not go to the gym after work or to allow myself to eat things that I don’t normally eat like croissants or Hamburger Helper,” she explains. “But I have been giving in to those cravings in moderation. In the first trimester, my body changing was so hard for me to accept. Now all I do is laugh about it.”

Fortunately, Ramirez hasn’t experienced morning sickness and other than “feeling constantly bloated and uncomfortable,” she is “feeling great” — and looking forward to her future.

“I get to experience this anticipation and excitement of meeting a child that will change my world forever and who will bring us so much joy,” she says.

“Sometimes it definitely feels like a panic, but I know it’s layered with excitement.”
