Once he was 27 years old — and found out he’s going to be a dad!
Danish singer Lukas Graham and his longtime girlfriend, high school sweetheart Marie-Louise “Rillo” Schwartz Petersen, are expecting their first child, he confirms to PEOPLE.
“In September, a little golden nugget will be welcomed into the world,” Graham tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Seeing my child born is so much more important than anything else I’ve got going on.”
The exciting news comes as his band‘s first LP, Lukas Graham, debuted at No. 3 while their breakout hit “7 Years” continues to climb the Billboard charts, currently sitting at No. 6 after peaking at No. 2 earlier this spring.

The album is largely inspired by family, particularly Graham’s own father, who died of a heart attack in 2012. The most prophetic lyrics are in “7 Years,” which reminisce on his youth while pondering his future, which he sees a partner and children in (“Soon I’ll be 30 years old … My woman brought children for me / So I can sing them all my songs / And I can tell them stories”).
The new addition to Graham’s family will arrive in the fall, but the singer tells PEOPLE he will take two months off from his tour to focus on Mom and baby.
Graham (born Lukas Graham Forchhammer) grew up with his Irish father and Danish mother in Christiania, a progressive commune in Copenhagen.
He found fame in Europe in 2011 when he began posting original tracks on YouTube; then in 2012, his namesake band released its album, which went quadruple-platinum in his native country before his stardom skyrocketed throughout Europe.
