Linda Perry: My Son Will Never Know Life Before Gay Marriage

"He's never going to experience these things - it's going to be something in the past," she tells PEOPLE

Linda Perry stepped out over the weekend and was spotted with an especially cute date by her side — or rather, on her hip.

The songwriter and record producer brought her 4-month-old son Rhodes Emilio along with her to attend the Peak Mind Foundation‘s Saturday celebration of the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday. The event — which focuses on spreading the message of the value of peace, kindness and universal compassion throughout the world — fits right in with the message she hopes to instill in Rhodes as he grows older.

“He’s never going to have to know the problems that we have had to go through with gay marriage,” Perry, 50, recently told PEOPLE ahead of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision. “He’s never going to experience these things — it’s going to be something in the past.”

Perry married The Talk co-host Sara Gilbert in 2014, and they welcomed their first child together in February.

And like every new mother, the “What’s Up” singer has not been shy in sharing about her son and his many talents.

“He’s a mover,” says Perry. “I’m looking at him like, this guy is going to start walking early.”

She also notes that motherhood has brought her closer to her wife, who has two other children — son Levi, 10, and daughter Sawyer, 7½ — from her previous relationship. Naturally, the songwriter compares the relationship to just that — writing a song with Gilbert’s verse and her chorus.

“We have to build together and collaborate on this human that we are going to create and help him with his vision of who he wants to be,” she explains.
