Lake Bell is taking her new normal one step at a time.
The Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp star made her first red carpet appearance Tuesday evening since giving birth to a son in May — her second child with husband Scott Campbell — at Women in Film Los Angeles Celebrates the 2017 Crystal + Lucy Awards Presented by Max Mara, held in Beverly Hills, California.
Speaking to PEOPLE, the 38-year-old actress said it was a little difficult to attend the event because daughter Nova, 2½, was “bummed” to see her mom leave considering she’s “been home quite a bit.” But luckily, the little girl’s sadness was short-lived.
“As my husband said, she recovered sort of shockingly quickly after I left,” Bell shares. “I think he told me that to make me feel better, but he said, ‘Don’t be offended, I just want you to know she’s okay.’ “

As her son is still pretty new to the family, the Secret Lives of Pets star admits she hasn’t learned too much yet in the way of parenting two kids at once.
“Every day is a surprise at this point. I will say I don’t know enough,” she explains. “I definitely am a mom of two now, but I’m only four weeks in. So check in with me later.”
Of the learning curve, Bell adds, “It’s really high right now.”

The working mom — who has three films lined up for 2017 and will reprise her role as Donna in the upcoming Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later — admits the answer to balancing it all is not black and white, and that she’s simply learning as she goes.
“You have to section off different times that meet each priority,” Bell explains. “I think that there is no answer that’s flawless. I’m still learning how to do it. I just gave birth weeks ago, so now having two children is even more complicated.”
