It’s hard to imagine Kerry Washington as anything other than a glamorous star, but her situation is sometimes very relatable to most parents.

The Scandal star sat down with Net-A-Porter for their magazine The Edit‘s most recent cover story, and took some time between political discussion — both real-life and small-screen — to dish on her life as a working mom.

“I can be covered in spit-up on a conference call while I’m pumping and that’s okay, because this is my perfect,” she says, breastfeeding her 7-month-old son Caleb Kelechi during the interview.

Adds the actress, 40, “It may not be somebody else’s, but this is mine.”

Washington and her husband, 35-year-old former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, are also parents to daughter Isabelle Amarachi, 3. And when it comes to balance, the four-time Emmy-nominated star says she taps into her Scandal character Olivia Pope for inspiration.

“We will not fail. We will not go down. We will fight the fight. There’s always a solution,” she says, adding that the words have “sapped into [her] bloodstream” after she has said them so many times.

“Now I feel that way,” Washington shares. “I wake up, I have a house full of kids and pets, a new production company, I’m number one on the call sheet, and I think: ‘I will not go down. There’s always another way.’ ”

One person who helps her keep her goals in line? Scandal showrunner Shonda Rhimes, who is a known supporter of working moms across her many projects.

“Shonda’s got I-don’t-know-how-many shows now, plus three kids, and she just figures it out,” Washington explains. “However busy I feel, Shonda feels busier, so I’m just going to rise to the occasion.”

Adds the star, “She’s been a real role model. Seeing the community she’s created and the work ethic – I feel like there should be more of this in the world.”
