Kate Hudson on Preteen Son Ryder's Changing Hormones: 'It Makes for So Much Comedy!'

Celebrity moms talk to Chelsea Handler about what it's like to parent preteen boys

Chelsea Handler‘s brand-new Netflix talk show Chelsea only premiered a few weeks ago, but the hostess has already had some pretty high-profile mom guests. Among them? Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow — and now, Kate Hudson, Mayim Bialik and Malin Akerman.

In a clip from the newest episode of her show, premiering Wednesday, Handler sits down with the actresses over dinner to hear about what it’s like to be a mom to tween boys.

“I’m loving the preteen [experience],” says 37-year-old Hudson, whose son with ex-husband Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes is 12-year-old Ryder Russell.

She adds with a laugh, “His hormonal moods are so fun for me, because it makes for so much comedy!”

Bialik, 40, is mom to two boys: Miles, 10, and Fred, 7½. And she can definitely relate to Hudson, as her older son is swiftly approaching his own preteen years.

“He’s got, like, a little swagger to him,” says the star of The Big Bang Theory. “He wants to cuddle me at home, but not in public. He doesn’t know me in public, even though I’m the person who gives him literally everything he needs.”

But Hudson — who has another son, 4½-year-old Bingham “Bing” Hawn, with Muse frontman and ex-fiancé Matthew Bellamy — doesn’t let the leave-me-alone-in-public attitude stop her from bonding with her tween son.

“I tried to hold Ryder’s hand the other day in public, and he was like, ‘Mom, please don’t,’ ” says the Almost Famous actress, author, and daughter of Goldie Hawn. “And then I just grabbed his hand, like, ‘I’m gonna grab your hand!’ And it became funny.”

“I read this study that there’s this pheromone that moms give off that is very yucky to boys when they hit about 10,” notes Bialik who, aside from an acting career, holds a Ph.D in neuroscience. “So I told him, because I wanted him to feel OK about the separation he’s trying to establish between us.

“He’s like, ‘Mom, that is totally happening,’ ” the former Blossom actress, who is divorced from her sons’ father Michael Stone, shares Miles told her when she informed him about the study.
