John Legend is using his platform to do good — so daughter Luna can grow up in a better world.

The “Start” singer tells PEOPLE in New York City Saturday — ahead of the launch of his Belvedere(RED) campaign — that he’s “always wanted to give back but [being a father] just gives you even more reason to want the world to be a better place because you want the world to be better for your kids than it was for you.”

He continues, “I think it’s been great for me but if we can make it even better for Luna that’d be great.”

Belvedere contributes 50 percent of its profits from Legend’s special edition (RED) bottles — featuring special artwork by South African artist Esther Mahlangu — to the Global Fund to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Of fatherhood, Legend, 37, says, “It’s just so much love, you feel that connection with your wife and with your daughter, and I think it’s a powerful thing to start building a family.”

“And I love that feeling,” he says.

Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen, 30, welcomed Luna, their first child, in April.

Since then, he’s focused on mastering his daddy skills. High points? Diaper changing, burping, and, he says, “I can do a good bottle feeding.”

The singer and Teigen have also somewhat narrowed down their parenting roles.

“I think I’m probably in general more a laid back person than Chrissy,” he tells PEOPLE. “I think we’ll both be good cop and bad cop at times, depending on the subject matter.”

And at almost 5 months old, Luna already has a little personality. Legend says his daughter is “very sweet.”

“She seems to be able to handle a lot of different environments because she’s traveled a lot with us already,” he shares. “We’ve been to Italy, and to France and New York, and Mexico with her, and so she’s traveled quite a lot with us already. She’s been able to handle all that so hopefully we’re getting her prepared for the kind of life we live.”

When the family of three is at their new home in L.A., though, Luna had quite the setup. Her nursery, he says, has some totally unique decor: four painting’s of the couple’s dogs.

“Also, there’s eight other ones of pitbulls,” he says. “This woman Sophie Gamand she does these paintings that soften the image of pitbulls because they have such an association of violence and mayhem attached to their breed. So her whole mission is to help them find homes and to kind of feminize them.”

Legend concludes, “So that’s the coolest part of her nursery.”

And it’s there that the singer serenades his baby with little jingles, which he insists are “terrible.”

There will be a special song for Luna on Legend’s new album, though, he says, teasing only that it’s coming soon.
