Jessica Chastain questioned whether or not stereotypes found on children clothes "actually push girls forward"

Jessica Chastain made a disappointing discovery while shopping for children’s clothing for her daughter on Friday afternoon.

The actress, 41, who welcomed her first child with husband Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo in November, explained on her Instagram Stories that she went to a department store to look for onesies and was disappointed by the gender stereotypes evident in many designs.

In the girls’ section, Chastain revealed she saw pink outfits adorned with crowns, kittens and flowers.

However, in the boys’ section, Chastain saw clothes that encouraged boys to be adventurous and ambitious.

Chastain then shared a photo of the onesies she purchased from both sections.

Girls’ section

In the first shot, Chastain showed pink onesies with ruffles. In the second, she showed boy onesies that read, “Future Scientist,” “Future Inventor” and “Future Astronaut.”

While very private when it comes to her daughter, whom she called “Little Miss Thing” in the video, the Molly’s Game star asked her fans to consider whether these types of messages are harmful to young girls.

“So this is just something I guess to challenge ourselves, challenge me and say what have I grown accustomed to in our media, in our clothing, in our music,” Chastain said in the clip.

“Do these stereotypes actually push girls forward?”

Chastain has long been an avid supporter of women’s rights and social pay equality.

In May, Chastain was revealed as the face of Ralph Lauren Fragrances scent, Woman.

In partnership with the brand, the actress used her voice to support a new initiative Lead Like a Woman campaign.

The collaboration “fits in quite well with my entire ideology,” the brand Chastain told PeopleStyle exclusively.

Early last year, Chastain took to social media to support actress Michelle Williams after reports surfaced that she was paid less than $1,000 for reshoots on All the Money in the World compared to the $1.5 million her costar Mark Wahlberg earned. (Wahlberg later donated the seven-figure sum to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Williams’ name.) And days later, Octavia Spencer revealed that Chastain helped her earn five times the salary she originally asked for a role.

Having championed for her colleagues, Chastain sees this initiative, in which people will be encouraged to share their definition of leadership using #LeadLikeAWoman, as an opportunity to reach women beyond Hollywood.

“What I’m excited about is that this will focus on empowering women, and shine a light on inequality in all industries,” says Chastain.
