As Jerry O’Connell‘s 6½-year-old twin daughters Dolly and Charlie continue to grow up, the former Stand By Me star continues to be shocked at their expanding knowledge.

“They’re in first grade. I already don’t understand their homework,” O’Connell, 41, told PEOPLE at Friday’s 2015 Television Industry Advocacy Awards Gala benefitting The Creative Coalition in Los Angeles, where he accepted an award on behalf of friend Anthony Anderson.

He adds of his children with wife Rebecca Romijn, 42, “Some of their homework is on the computer. They know it better than I do. I was having problems logging on to a website, but my kids knew how.”

And this is a fact that O’Connell, a graduate of New York University himself, is having trouble wrapping his head around. “It’s frightening how much they know! They’re not babies anymore — it’s getting real now,” he shares.

In order to help (and keep tabs on) the twins, both O’Connell and Romijn are very active in their school.

“They’re doing a play, which we volunteer for,” O’Connell explains. “So we help whenever we can.”

For Romijn, that help includes volunteering at the school library — much to O’Connell’s amusement. “My wife, ironically enough, is in a show called The Librarians, and she volunteers at their library,” he says.

And what do the students think of seeing Romijn behind the book shelves at school? According to her husband, they go pretty wild.

“It’s hilarious,” says O’Connell with a laugh. “I just take pictures of it the whole time!”
