Making the jump from Saturday Night Live funnyman to cinematic leading man seemed to be all too easy for Jason Sudeikis, but it was becoming a father that brought the rising star back to terra firma.
“It takes a village,” the actor told PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie, Sleeping with Other People, sponsored by Dark Horse, when asked how he and fiancée Olivia Wilde navigate the couple’s careers along with the joys of parenthood.
Sudeikis points out that he and the actress actually have a (very large!) support system that keeps them both grounded.
“We have a tiny village known as Brooklyn,” he jokes. “But it really comes down to communication, and using all of these devices that we use too often to distance ourselves, to actually bring us closer together.”
The 39 year old is happy to admit that his son, Otis Alexander, surprises him at every turn, as the 17-month-old is a basketball-playing, reggae-music-loving, free spirit. Not that Sudeikis or Wilde will take any credit for it — just yet!
“We just watched a lot of Bear Grylls,” Sudeikis deadpans of his parenting approach. “We love … every second we get with him in our busy lives, and we surround him with people that do the exact same at all times.”
Hearing his son speak has pulled at Sudeikis’ heartstrings, with the actor admitting that it didn’t take much for his toddler to have him wrapped around his finger.
“He calls me Dada. I think that’s hilarious, mind-blowingly hilarious,” the proud dad shares. “Maybe not hilarious in the conventional sense of a Chris Rock joke, or a Louis C.K. T.V. show, but it’s hilarious to me. I never thought that was going to happen and that it would be so intoxicating when it did.”
