Japanese Princess to undergo Cesarean

Princess Kiko of Japan, wife of Prince Akishino, will undergo a Cesarean section next month after doctors discovered several complications. The Princess, who is due in September, has symptoms of the medical condition partial placenta previa, in which the placenta drops too low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the cervix, making a vaginal delivery impossible.

Recently there have been movements to change Japan’s male only succession laws to allow Princess Aiko, the daughter of the Crown Prince, to one day assume the throne. However, should Princess Kiko give birth to a baby boy, it would be harder to change this centuries old law. Princess Kiko and Prince Akishino have two daughters.
