James Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly are about to be outnumbered.
The couple are already parents to Joshua, 22 months, and Olivia, 3, and are set to welcome their third child “very soon.”
“There are moments where we will be dealing with the two, it will be a handful and I’ll think, ‘Well, this is about to get even trickier,’ ” Van Der Beek, 36, told PEOPLE at the Television Critics Association press tour Monday.
As he prepares to add to his family, the former Dawson’s Creek star says Olivia is “excited” and he has had “heart-to hearts” with her little brother.
“I think he gets it on some level — maybe not on an immediate level — but in some part of his heart and soul he does,” says Van Der Beek, who recently wrapped filming the first season of his new CBS sitcom Friends With Better Lives, which premieres March 31.
Van Der Beek says he misses being able to sleep in on his days off, but is “very appreciative of the way things are” and loves that changing diapers keeps him grounded.
“The kids are the best home base you could possibly have,” he says. “It tethers you to reality. I can go to work and just go as far out as I can get and I know that by the time I come home, I’ll be brought right back to earth.”
