Jaime Pressly and her 9-year-old son Dezi James both love crafting — and they’re constantly brainstorming new ideas for things to create together.

“We were trying to come up with something that was cool and different because we’ve pretty much done every arts and crafts there is!” the Mom star, 39, tells PEOPLE of how they thought of making a “summer tree,” a palm tree decorated with painted sand dollars and starfish.

“We have Christmas trees, and it’s our favorite time of year, but it’s the only time you actually get to decorate a tree,” Pressly adds.

The actress and her son got inspiration for their unique craft after a recent trip to Pressly’s home state of North Carolina.

“We brought back a bunch of sand dollars with us,” the former My Name Is Earl star says. “And we’re also throwing in a little bit of home by painting things in Carolina blue.”

The craft “had all the elements that little boys like,” adds Pressly. “The mess, the hot-glue gun and the goofiness!”

“Dezi loves painting, and he really loves all the glitter and stuff,” the actress continues. “And as a little boy should, [he likes] anything hot that you shouldn’t touch, so he was super into the hot-glue gun.”

Pressly is looking forward to displaying the end product.

“It will sit on our outdoor table with all our decorations and little photos, and we can change them up and add to them as we get them,” she explains.
