Idina Menzel is opening up about her song “Perfect Story,” and what it means to her and her family — particularly in regard to her divorce from ex-husband Taye Diggs and the impact it has had on their 7-year-old son Walker Nathaniel.
“I sang it for the first time onstage last night in front of an audience and I didn’t want to start crying,” Menzel, 45, told PEOPLE Now of the song, which is featured on her new full-length album idina.
“I felt it coming on and I had to fight it [off] because you don’t sing very well when you’re crying,” adds the former Wicked star.

“But that’s the beautiful thing about writing music and getting in the studio with amazing collaborators and songwriters and producers — and they had a similar experience, the people I was working with,” Menzel adds. “And so we were able to commiserate and write about this common feeling that a lot of parents have.”
The Frozen voice actress is candid about her own feelings toward what the song means in terms of her son’s upbringing and experiences throughout his parents’ split.
“You have a lot of regret with a child, and feeling like you’re failing them in some way,” she says. “Not giving them the idealistic scenario.”
The actress and singer has made it clear that she and her ex-husband have one simple objective: to make Walker their priority.
“Your child comes first, that’s all,” Menzel, who recently announced her engagement to actor Aaron Lohr, says about sharing parenting duties with Diggs.
“It’s all about that,” she adds. “He comes first and you have to get past your own egos and you never talk bad about each other.”
