Hilary Duff: Every Mom Needs Time to Herself
"I think asking for help on a tired day isn't a sign of weakness. A lot of changes have come into your life quickly and it's important to take time for yourself!"
First-time mom Hilary Duff is paying it forward once again.
After she and husband Mike Comrie welcomed now 13-month-old son Luca Cruz, the author/actress partnered with Johnson’s Baby Cares initiative, a campaign to offer support to moms in need.
Now Duff is back teaming up with the company just in time for Mother’s Day, encouraging people to send digital care cards that will benefit Save the Children.
In addition to opening up about her charity work, Duff spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about life with Luca — touching on everything from their favorite pastimes to his first birthday party, and how she plans to spend her special weekend.
PEOPLE: So you’re teaming up with Johnson’s Baby Cares again — tell us why this charity is so important to you.
Hilary: As a first time mom, I’ve been so grateful for the support I received from family, friends and other moms over the past year. Their inspiring words and positive encouragement really helped me get through the more challenging days.
Not all moms are lucky enough to have the same support or even basic everyday resources to help them and their babies thrive, which is why I’m proud to once again partner with Johnson’s Baby Cares on its latest campaign in support of Save the Children, which provides funding to ensure families have basic essentials and educational resources to care for their babies, while delivering social support and positive encouragement to moms along the way.
Just in time for Mother’s Day, you too can help! Visit www.johnsonsbabycares.com to send a digital Care Card filled with love and encouragement to a special mom in your life. For every card sent, shared or liked Johnson’s Baby will donate $1 to Save the Children to benefit early parenting and childhood education.
PEOPLE: Luca’s first year is now behind you. What do you know now that you didn’t a year ago? Now that you’ve got a year’s experience under your belt, what advice would you give new moms that you wish someone had told you?
Hilary: I think asking for help on a tired day isn’t a sign of weakness. A lot of changes have come into your life quickly and it’s important to take time for yourself! Whether that be a workout, a bath, shopping with friends, or even reading outside for half an hour, all moms should take that time.
PEOPLE: How did you celebrate Luca’s birthday? We saw his super cool cake – love it. How’d you pick the theme?
Hilary: We had a party at the house with close friends and family with about 12 little rugrats running around. Luca’s only 1, and I like robots so I basically picked the theme, haha!
PEOPLE: What are Luca’s latest milestones? We heard he’s walking. Was it a slow start or did he one day just take off?
Hilary: Yes, he is, and it definitely took us by surprise! He just decided one day to start speed walking. He basically skipped the walking step and went full speed ahead!
PEOPLE: What are your favorite moments with him?
Hilary: Bathtime — we love to take baths together! Pretty much any activity with water excites him so swimming is tons of fun. We also love to let him get really dirty when he eats so feeding him is a lot of fun!
PEOPLE: What do you think/hope Mike has planned for Mother’s Day?
Hilary: Mother’s Day is super exciting because now that I’ve had Luca, we have two moms in our family! We’re planning a family vacation so it will be nice to spend time together because sometimes our schedules send us all off in different directions.
PEOPLE: We love literally every outfit we see you photographed in. Would love to hear about what you’re digging now, any trends you’re hoping to try this summer and your favorite brands!
Hilary: Thank you! Now that I have Luca, I spend less time on my outfits — I end up wearing easy things that I know are going to work. I love skinny jeans, denim or fun colors! I love leather shorts and blazers! I’m really into low-heeled booties and sneakers right now! And I pretty much live in sweaters, light or heavy weight depending on the weather.
