Hilaria Baldwin knows that kids are unpredictable — so her secret to keeping her home clean and organized has everything to do with working around that fact.

“I am a big believer in not stressing the kids out,” the mother of four, 35, tells Architectural Digest of her children with husband Alec Baldwin: their daughter Carmen Gabriela, 5½, plus sons Romeo Alejandro David, 9 months, Leonardo Ángel Charles, 2, and Rafael Thomas, 3½.

“So, all the furniture that we have is [covered with] very washable fabrics, which is just really relaxing because, you know what? Your kids are going to color on your couch and they are going to spill something and I don’t want it to be this big stressful, end-of-the-world [situation],” she explains.

Baldwin also makes sure to avoid “sharp corners” and has “an ottoman that’s made out of fabric rather than a coffee table, because that’s the number one thing for kids to get cut up on.”

“My kids are upside down and climbing all over the furniture and stuff like that,” the fitness instructor shares. “And as long as they are aware of what they’re doing, I let them do it.”

As far as tidiness is concerned? Baldwin says she and her husband have “designated a playroom” that’s complete with a multitude of baskets and a shelving unit from Pottery Barn.

“Especially if I’m pregnant and go through my crazy nesting-organization thing, I’ll put all the phones in one and all the cars in another basket and then you realize that they’re just going to get messed up,” she says.

“So, I think that a lot of it is just realizing we can have order in the house, by saying there’s a designated place where we go to play.”

Baldwin shares that the couple’s homes in New York City and the Hamptons were both designed by her friend Danny Romanoff, an interior designer. And while their N.Y.C. apartment has “a more city feel,” their vacation property “is a little more country” complete with one room that is off limits while their kids are young.

“In the Hamptons, we have a room that we never go into: our adult living room,” she tells AD. “That obviously never gets used because there are always children around.”

“But one day when our children are like 25 years old, Alec and I are gonna sit in there, we’re going to have a good time!” Baldwin enthuses. “We’re going to read a book, do all this stuff we don’t get to do.”
