Becoming a mother was a transformative experience for Good Morning America‘s Ginger Zee.

“Every woman who has been pregnant knows that it messes with your mind a little bit,” the meteorologist, 35, tells PEOPLE. “You are suddenly someone else: you are a mother who is now responsible for another human being. That’s awesome, but it changes who you are.”

But now Zee — who, along with her husband, NBC news correspondent Ben Aaron, welcomed son Adrian Benjamin in December — is looking to rediscover who she is as a contestant on season 22 of Dancing with the Stars.

“I didn’t know what to expect coming into tonight,” Zee said after Monday’s premiere episode. “I was nervous coming out here as this new mom with no dance experience, but it means so much that the joy I felt getting on that stage shined through and was felt by the judges and the audience.”

In addition to her duties as a new mom, Zee will continue to appear on GMA in New York City while performing on the live DWTS shows every Monday.

“I love the challenge of any adventure. Had I not just had a baby, this would still have been a challenge, but balancing life and figuring it all out is part of the journey,” says Zee, who has already started to notice a change in both her body and mind.

“I can feel my body getting denser, stronger. I can feel it physically, but mentally is where I’m changing the most. I’m hoping to find myself again — and this experience will help me get there.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (at 8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
