Food Chain Friends: I Love You So Much, I Could Eat You

Here it is. My favorite toy from Toy Fair 2009. Of the thousands of products we saw, Food Chain Friends ($50 for a set of 5) just struck me as hilarious, odd, and strangely compelling.

They are soft stuffed animals with names like Zezzel, Fraaky, Herkin and Skoodle. The detailed story on the box explains their history and their hierarchy. They come in sets of two, three or five animals of several sizes, each with a gaping mouth so they can eat each other. The smaller animals all fit inside the larger ones, which makes for convenient storage, I suppose. The company says, “They’re friends. They eat each other. It’s a complicated relationship.”

The characters are funny looking, too. Some have polka dots or gaping teeth. They look sort of like dinosaur/bug/lizard hybrids. My 3 1/2-year-old son, Finn thinks they’re funny and doesn’t even realize he’s getting a science lesson while he plays.
